There
are 2 basically different types of computer memory. One
type is known as RAM which stands for Random Access Memory. RAM
is "volatile" meaning that the information in RAM disappears
when you shut down your computer. RAM is on a little computer
"chip". Current versions of Microsoft Windows
can access and make use of up to 4 gigabytes (gig). Buying
and installing more than 4 gig is a waste; your system cannot
use it AND it may pose problems with the system managing the
memory for you.
The
2nd type of memory is a "reserved" area on your hard drive. This
is usually referred to as a "page file". The more
RAM you have the less your system will be reading and writing to
your hard drive. Your computer will run faster with more RAM
and it will also save wear and tear on your hard drive by reducing
the necessary reading and writing. More RAM, up to 4 Gig, will
help your hard drive last longer.
